Breast Cancer Facts
• The most common cancer among females worldwide
• One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime

Risk Factors
• Gender: 100 times more often in women than in men
• Age: >55 yr old
• Family history of breast cancer
• Personal history of breast cancer or non-cancerous breast disease

• Lack of exercise
• Poor diet: diet high in saturated fat, lacking fruits and vegetables
• Alcohol use
• Radiation to chest
• Taking hormone replacement therapy

• Obesity

What good is a mammogram test??
• Currently the best available population-based method to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages (even before the lump can be felt), WHEN TREATMENT IS MOST SUCCESSFUL!!!
• Screening mammogram can reduce the risk of death from breast cancer by 30%
• 2 % of screening mammograms are abnormal and require biopsy
Who should have a mammogram?
• Screen for breast cancer in women without symptoms
• Individual having close family history of breast cancer
• Individual who have specific types of non-cancerous lumps
• Those who experience any changes in the breast eg: a lump, nipple discharge, dimpling of the skin
Recommendations of the American Cancer Society:
l a woman obtain her first baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 to 40
l after the age of 40, yearly mammogram should be done
The earlier the breast cancer is detected, the better your chances of survival.
